Poor tyre storage can cause cracking, deformation and pressure loss. Whether you store tyres at home or at a garage, following the right method protects your investment.
Proper storage of off-season tyres protects your financial investment and ensures they are in safe, roadworthy condition when you next need them. A few straightforward precautions can dramatically extend the usable life of a stored set of tyres.
1Clean Tyres Before Storage
Before storing, wash tyres thoroughly with mild soap and water to remove road grime, brake dust, tar and any chemical residue. Dry them completely before storage. Avoid applying tyre dressings that contain silicone or petrochemical solvents, which can accelerate rubber degradation.
2Ideal Storage Environment
Store tyres in a cool, dark, dry location away from direct sunlight and sources of ozone — electric motors, compressors and fluorescent lighting all generate ozone that degrades rubber over time. A dry garage or utility room is generally suitable; never store outdoors without comprehensive UV protection.
3Mounted vs Unmounted Storage
Tyres on rims can be stored stacked horizontally or hung from wall hooks. Tyres without rims should be stored upright and rotated a quarter-turn every month or so to prevent flat-spotting. Maintaining a small amount of pressure in mounted stored tyres helps them retain their shape.
4Inspection Before Refitting
Before refitting stored tyres, inspect each one carefully for cracking on the sidewall and tread, loss of flexibility and any deformation. If tyres have been stored for more than five years, have them inspected by a professional before use even if they appear visually sound.
