How to Read a Tyre Label: The EU Rating System Explained

EU tyre labels rate each tyre on fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise. We explain how to use these ratings to pick the safest, most economical tyre for your car.

Every tyre sold in the UK and EU must carry a standardised label rating its performance across three key categories. Learning to read this label quickly is a simple way to make a safer, more informed tyre purchase without needing specialist knowledge.

1Fuel Efficiency Rating (A–G)

Rated from A (best) to G (worst), the fuel efficiency score reflects the tyre's rolling resistance. A tyre rated A instead of G can save up to 0.5 litres per 100 km — a modest saving per journey that accumulates meaningfully over the life of the tyre.

2Wet Grip Rating (A–G)

Wet grip is arguably the most safety-critical rating on the label. The difference between an A-rated and F-rated tyre is approximately 18 metres of additional stopping distance from 80 km/h on a wet road — more than the length of four cars. Always prioritise wet grip for UK conditions.

3External Noise Level

The label shows external road noise in decibels alongside a wave symbol: one wave means below the EU limit, two waves means meeting the limit, and three waves means above it. Lower external noise reduces the environmental impact of road travel and improves community quality of life.

4Using the Label to Compare Tyres

When comparing tyres at a similar price point, prioritise wet grip first, then fuel efficiency. A tyre rated A for wet grip and C for fuel efficiency is generally a better all-round choice for UK roads than one rated C for wet grip and A for fuel efficiency.
