What Causes Uneven Tyre Wear and How to Fix It

Uneven wear patterns on your tyres are a symptom of underlying problems — from misaligned wheels to worn suspension. Here is how to diagnose and address each pattern.

Uneven tyre wear is almost always a symptom of an underlying mechanical issue rather than a problem in itself. Identifying the wear pattern gives a reliable diagnosis of what is causing it and what needs to be corrected before new tyres are fitted.

1Centre Wear — Over-Inflation

A strip of wear running along the centre of the tread indicates the tyre is over-inflated. The excessive pressure causes the centre to bulge outward and bear more load than the shoulders. The fix is straightforward: reduce pressure to the manufacturer's recommended level.

2Both-Edge Wear — Under-Inflation

Wear concentrated on both outer edges of the tread is the classic sign of chronic under-inflation. The tyre collapses under load, pushing weight to the shoulders. This is the most common uneven wear pattern seen by mobile tyre fitters in everyday use.

3One-Sided Wear — Alignment Problem

Wear concentrated on just one edge of the tyre — inner or outer — points to a wheel alignment or camber angle issue. The wheel is not sitting at the correct angle, causing one edge to scrub continuously against the road. An alignment check and correction is required.

4Scalloping or Cupping

A series of irregular high and low spots around the tyre circumference — a pattern called scalloping or cupping — indicates wheel imbalance or a worn shock absorber. The tyre is bouncing rather than rolling smoothly. Both the balancing and suspension should be inspected.

Takeaway

Always address the root cause of uneven wear before fitting new tyres — otherwise the same pattern will reappear. Bradford Mobile Tyres can advise on whether alignment, balancing or suspension work is needed alongside a replacement.
